A train crossing the Thai countryside

Thailand adventure itineraries

Four routes that keep the travel days short and the active days long, each built from our destination guides.

How to plan a route

Thailand is bigger than it looks on a map: Chiang Mai is 700 km north of Bangkok, and Krabi 800 km south. The routes below follow three rules. Stay at least two or three nights in each base, because the best days start early. Fly the long legs — domestic flights of about an hour are frequent and inexpensive — and keep trains and ferries for the journeys that are experiences in themselves. And choose your coast by season: the Andaman side from November to April, the Gulf islands from February to September (see when to go).

Every stop links to a destination guide with tours, transport and a sample plan for that place.

Itinerary FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough for Thailand?

Enough for one region done well: either Bangkok and the north, or Bangkok and one coast. Trying to do both in a week means spending much of it in transit.

Should I go north or south first?

North first, usually: finish the active mountain days and end on a beach. In March and April, when the north is hazy, skip it and spend longer in the south.

Can I combine the Andaman coast and the Gulf islands?

Yes — Khao Sok lies between them, and joint bus-and-ferry tickets link Krabi with Koh Samui in five to eight hours. But their seasons differ, so in most months one coast will have better weather.

Do I need to book transport in advance?

Book sleeper trains, flights around holidays and ferries in peak weeks ahead of time. Minivans and most ferries can be booked a day or two before. See getting there & around.
